Sweet Manes was started because of the love I have for people, animals, and my dad. My dad died on Christmas Eve 2012. My heart was broken and I couldn't imagine having to live without him. I had feared the day my dad would die but I never imagined how painful it would be. My dad and I shared our love of nature, animals, gardening, and travel. In the picture below we are on safari in Tanzania. My dad was probably sick on this trip but he didn't know it at the time. He died from cancer of the liver.
After he died I was searching for something to mend my soul and I wanted to do something in his honor and give back to others.
I was on Craigslist and found a newly started foundation that was looking for volunteers to work with miniature horses. The mission of the foundation was to promote mental and physical healing, therapy and education through interaction with miniature horses. That's what I needed too-healing! I worked with the horses and loved the joy that the horses brought to those we visited. My dad would love this!
I now have six registered therapy horses of my own! There is a lot of work that goes into training a therapy horse. I am always looking for "horse people" to come and work with the horses (and me for that matter!) I hope to bring a "little bit" of horse magic to those that need it most! ~Kathi
